We slipped in behind a rain front and made it to Baxley, GA Wal-mart for our first night on the road,Tuesday, Dec. 27. That put us only 85 miles from Jekyll Island and the 36th Annual Jekyll Island Bluegrass Festival that has become an annual tradition for us. The short drive from Baxley to Jekyll allowed us to arrive early enough at the Jekyll Island airport to claim the best site at the end of the runway with a sweeping view of the intracoastal waterway and the marshes of Glynn – and daily marvelous sunsets.
Our days at Jekyll have consisted of bike rides in the morning, bluegrass in the afternoon, and computer time in the evenings not to mention satisfying all of Tina’s needs and wants. This is the last year of airport camping, which we regret, as next year the festival will be in the new convention center which is scheduled be completed this spring.
This part of the winter trip may be our favorite as we love driving the I-16 alternative to Brunswick, U.S. 431, which includes a lot of long straight stretches through tall south Georgia pine trees. Jekyll has its own unique charm too with its giant moss draped live oak trees in the protected state park and the restored homes and hotel in the historic district.
