On Sunday we headed north to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area to see the huge sand dunes. Though the dunes are in constant flux, they reached their present size and shape about 7000 years ago. We chose the John Dellenback Dunes Trail, about 10 miles south of Reedsport, to explore the dunes. The 3 mile round trip trail leads through an area of dunes 2 miles wide by 4 miles long – but we didn’t cover all that. The trail goes through woods before reaching the dunes, and it was amazing to emerge from the trees and see really huge sand dunes rising up all around us as far as we could see. We were surprised that the sand was as firm as it was. Our shoes sank only a couple of inches at most as we climbed up the dunes. From the top we could see the Pacific. It was quite an experience. Returning to our RV park in Coos Bay, we crossed one of the beautiful historic bridges that coastal Oregon is known for. Click HERE to see more pictres.
